I can't get my own VS to play ball, so here we go.

@carlosmn If you want to use the result of this PR with LibGit2Sharp, you'll need to use it with the branch from this https://github.com/libgit2/libgit2sharp/pull/1511 because I've already made changes here that require the changes from that branch.
