Fallback UTF-8 conversion support #239

If Unicode conversion fails for some reason an exception is raised.  This new 
code catches that exception and tries a looser UTF-8 conversion.

Merging into issue 128. The patch proposed there seems to fix the problem with 
less code.
Could you provide a test case?
