add a mastodon account... #47

should we have a mastodon account?

xuv commented 6 years ago

@aoloe I've been refraining myself from opening one. But yes. I think we should.

Main reason is we will talk directly with our community and reach out to them where they are probably spending most of their time already.

The big question is: on which instance? I've considered using https://mastodon.art at some point... Seemed relevant... Any other suggestion?

xuv commented 6 years ago

@aoloe Other suggestion, more in tune with federation values, would be to host our own instance. Maybe not Mastodon itself as it is quite a piece of software to install, but Pleroma, I've heard is a lightweight system. And it federates without trouble with Mastodon. How does that sound to you? We could have then something like @lgmeeting@social.libregraphicsmeeting.org or something similar.

hi @xuv, currently, we are hosted by tuxfamily, a community based hoster for free software.

as far as i can tell, this limits us to installing php based software.

but we could get in touch with tuxfamily and see if they are interested in hosting a mastodon instance.

or host it somewhere else? do you have any hint?

Hey @aoloe

I see. I knew Tuxfamily was limited. But did not think it was just going to be PHP based apps. Pleroma uses Elixir... So that is a no-go I guess. And Mastodon itself is quite a piece of software to install. I participated in the set up for the instance we use at work, and that was not a simple task.

If we are looking to use a Mastodon instance somewhere else, there is https://masto.host/ that has small plans that could fit for us. But it's still $5/month.
