What are the accepted 3D file formats to list on the “Submit page” ?

xuv commented 10 years ago

I think we should put an emphasis on open standard 3D file formats. Although we accept "closed source" file formats if they are not the only one available in the project. Is that possible for you @Mathieu-G ?

Mathieu-G commented 10 years ago

Yes, good idea. 3D Open standard : .X3D, .blend, .dae (Collada), obj(seems open, actually not standard) / 2D open standard : .dxf, svg(standard?) 3D Closed format: .skp, .3ds, iges(open?), step, stl, / 2d closed format: dwg, eps

xuv commented 10 years ago

the .blend file format is not really open and standard. And although it's related to Blender (free software). The main problem is that it's not well documented and to my knowledge, only Blender can open it.

IGES is "ANSI standard since 1980" according to wikipedia

STL is "open" (could not find the license) and widely used.

SVG (which is 2D) is open and standard (W3C)

So to recap, here's a proposition:

3D source file formats:

2D source file formats:

Documentation file formats:

The question is "standard" means ISO standard or else, one might ask. :)
