i think i found out what was causing the crashing while earning retroachievements across different systems i have (pi3b/linux desktop/batocera) it seems that i needed to remove all images from the cheevos/badges folder. (why this happens i dont know) so i made a backup folder and moved everything from the cheevos/badges folder there. now i dont have had a crash past 10 (i believe) achievements, where before nearly any achievement would let any of my systems hardcrash.
for windows (i believe) this folder \retroarch\thumbnails\cheevos\badges
linux this one /home/
batocera this one smb://batocera.local/share/system/.config/retroarch/thumbnails/cheevos/badges/
(i found this method via one of the posts on the retroarch github)
That's potentially great news. If you put the backup folder back, does the crashing start again? Can you share a copy of the backup folder?
I've not had this issue (on Win10 x64) since the merge of b0aa447d5f563f289c10d5b37248625e6d9b423c
i just moved something around 1440 png or jpg files (they ended at *locked/unlocked.png/jpg) from the smb://batocera.local/share/system/.config/retroarch/thumbnails/cheevos/badges folder to another location, other computer. but i really do not wanna put these images back because the crashing has stopped now. i fear it might return as i do not really know what is going on here. i just did what was mentioned here https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/9533 as i already stated. i am not involved into retroarch, im only a user and i dont know what is happening here or why retroarch works the way it does. however, i find that this was happening on different systems, so it looks like this ´bug´ or flaw might be happening on a larger scale than only being confined to equipment in my home. (different os/machines - desktop xubuntu/raspberrypi3b/retropie/batocera)
In order for us to fix the issue, we have to be able to reproduce it, and it sounds like something in your old badges directory was causing the issue. Having access to that data might make it possible for us to reproduce, and therefore fix the issue.
I was just suggesting that you put them back temporarily to see if the issue started happening again. Once verified, you could put things back into a working state. I understand if you don't want to chance things now that everything seems to be working, but I'd still like to examine the problematic files in hopes that they shed some light into what might be happening.
there is one weird thing that is the problem was happening on different platforms, which contained different files in that folder, during the crashing.. however, i have made a ls -a > dir.txt listing of the folder on the batocera rpi3b; (i dont know if this is the way to properly list the files you were asking for, but this was in that badges folder during the crashing. (the sizes of the files were some kb each) these files i did all remove and put in a different folder on another computer ) . .. 00083_lock.png 00083.png 00084_lock.png 00084.png 00085_lock.png I'm more interested in if any of the files are "wrong". Are they all valid image files? If one of them was not downloaded correctly, that may hint at the problem.
i dont know if this is the way to properly list the files you were asking for
it would have been better to attach the dir.txt
to the comment, instead of creating a huge comment with the listing.
upss sorry i didnt realize this i try to attach the zip of the badges folder i removed and the path to the folder on my batocera pi3b is in the .txt
must add; try this with felix the cat on nes. every time i unlocked an achievement in that game it hung the system (any system)
I played all the way through the first world of Felix the Cat using your badge files, unlocking twelve achievements. I did not experience the issue. The badges are still timestamped a couple days ago, so I'm certainly that I used the files you provided.
Tried with latest master on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04, and official 1.8.8 release on Windows 10. I also tried a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 VM with a from-scratch RetroPie installation through EmulationStation. In all cases, the 12 achievements unlocked correctly and displayed the popups. Felix was a good test game as it only takes a few minutes to unlock the 12 achievements, and some of them unlock at the same time, and other unlock while the popup from a previous achievement is still visible.
I also looked at all the images in the your zip file (thank you), and none of them appear to be corrupt in any way, so that eliminates my primary theory.
I also tried playing with an empty badges directory (to force them to be downloaded), and while the first couple of popups didn't have images, eventually the images started appearing with the popups.
I do want to clarify that hanging is different than crashing. Crashing means the application closes unexpectedly. Hanging means the application is stuck in an infinite loop or deadlock. I thought I had seen another issue recently where unlocking multiple achievements at the same time would cause a deadlock, but I can't find it. And from your description, that doesn't seem to be a requirement.
Given that I'm still not able to reproduce, there's clearly something different in my configuration vs. yours. I've taken the stock configuration provided with the RetroPie installation and only enabled the RetroAchievements-related functionality (enabled/username/password/hardcore/leaderboards/rich presence/verbose/start active). I did not activate automatic screenshots or unofficial achievements.
Do you remember changing any other settings?
i dont get it. this problem hangs different systems in my home with different oses, (retropie (buster), batocera and xubuntu)i have no windows os machine btw. it almost seems like there is something weird going on here, i have check that it s not my gamepad (logitech f310), only things ive not checked are my router then, and a ethernet switchbox (which connects different computers to one ethernet out on the router, which is plugged into the wallsocket) wifi is off, i have ipv4 (still), 30 mb/s down 9 mb/s up. ; i really cannot imagine my router can be causing this, because it happens at the very specific moment an achievement unlocks - a router has no mind of its own at that point.
my settings for retroachievements are across all platforms hardcore mode = true leaderboards = false screenshots = false verbose = true rich presence = on (with of course the correct pass and login) what i changed as far as i know of is the leaderboards to false if it were as default enabled. further, i never enabled unofficial achievements.
do you have any idea what can cause this ? i dont want to be rude for asking things, but i m really puzzled now. i need to delete the badges folder every session i want to play with retroachievements now, it hung one time yesterday once while i reached a achievement in pitfall! atari2600 (eldorado achievement) because i did not empty the badges folder. however i was able to play a couple of hours before with a lot of achievements, instead of previousely the machine(s) hunging at every single achievement, so there is a difference. - but i really am wondering about what on earth can cause this.
is a faulty setting in a router maybe a cause ? is it my ethernet switchbox ? - never had any problem with it. there is/was no other device connected to my internet during these hung crashes.
I agree. As it seems to be happening consistently across your machines and not happening consistently from mine (or most others'), it's probably something in the network chain.
Perhaps you can try generating a log to see if there's anything notable being reported there?
i really cannot imagine my router can be causing this, because it happens at the very specific moment an achievement unlocks
achievement unlocks are one of the few things that retroarch does that uses the network while playing.
i read the instructions on how to make a log file - dont really know if its possible on batocera, but on a desktop (linux), if i would try to reproduce reaching an achievement and the the system hangs, wouldnt it be a 0 byte file as output afterwards ? because the system needs a power off/reset then, - the file is still opened for writing at the moment the system hangs ?
well i found out that the system hanging after reaching an achievement is still present, however it seems to be significally reduced by deleting the contents of the cheevos/badges folder. now i get around a chance of 1 out of 10 or 15 when reaching an achievement, the (any) system hangs, normally without emptying the badges folder this was a chance of (almost) every time i reached an achievement. and i cannot find the cause. this is unbelievable. i also tried enabling developer debug output in batocera (system settings), however this did not work, a couple of log files, containing almost nothing, only a few lines, and a 0 byte file stderr.log or something it was named. if anyone can tell me what is going on here please do reply because i m out of options i guess.
retroarch error log.tar.gz this is the log of retroarch from retropie (newest) on my desktop pc (xubuntu 20.04) - debug output as i was already fearing the 0byte file is when the game crashed in a gameboy core with felix as game. also i ve seen this line in the mslug5 (arcade) output, which it did not crash in
[INFO] [Cheats]: Save game-specific cheatfile: /home/singingcoyote13/.config/retroarch/cheats/FinalBurn Neo/mslug5.cht
what does this line mean ? i am not using cheats while earning retroachievements, and i looked into that folder but there was nothing in there also ? can this have anything to do with the problems ?
That's a standard message. If you chose to use cheats, that's where the cheats you added would be saved, or auto-loaded from if they already existed. It doesn't mean you're actually using them.
so i was able to play 1.5 hours without any hanging of the batocera rpi3B and reaching a couple of achievements, by removing the ethernet switch between the raspberry and the router. (so i connected the pi directly to the router via an ethernetcable) the same switch also connects to this desktop pc with the same problems. i still dont know if this switch is the cause but i did this to try to rule out every possibility. for anyones info it is a tp-link TL-SG105E 5 ports ethernet switch. it came supplied with a software manager, but i am on linux on all my systems at home, and though i tried to get to install this tp-link switch software once, i never succeeded it was windows only, i tried playonlinux and wine in all combos/versions, it kept refusing to run. last time i ran the switch to configure it was well before 2015 when i still had windows 10 installed on one of my systems. i cannot tell yet if this is the cause of the hanging of the systems but it looks like it. if it hangs again i will let it know, also if it doesnt the couple of days. how it comes that this hanging happens when unlocking an achievement combined to this switchbox i really dont know.
if anyone has any other suggestions, please then let me know, because i really want to solve this.
and the system hung again during reaching an achievement, with nothing inbetween my (isp´s) internet router. (plugged directly into the router - ethernet) so i am out of options now. the odd thing is that this is happening with multiple different systems, and on different oses. (xubuntu, debian (batocera) and retropie (buster)) - if only it would be confined to one single system or device, i would assume its the device which has the cause, but it isnt happening with only one system, so this is becoming impossible to solve. (for me at least) odd thing also, is that i never actually had a linux system hung, and most certainly not (even manually) repeatable since years. can anyone give me any suggestion(s) on what is really going on here ? please
i m not certain if/or that i found out what could be causing it i changed my password to something else, before it contained a %#$ right after eachother halfway in the password. i noticed in batocera.conf that there should be made a circumvention when using either # or $ with /. so i removed the %#$ part in my password and changed it to something else, and i made sure only letters and numbers are being used now. i testtried some games, and after 2 hours and around 10 -20 achievements later, nothing has happend thus far. this would be the only explanation i could think of, since two completely different systems, with different oses and software were hanging while earning achievements. if it though does happen again i ll post it here
nope this was not it. crashed-hung again this morning while unlocking a achievement. ok this is it. there is nothing else left to try to find out what is causing all my computers to hang (1 out of 20 times at random) when i unlock an achievement (retroachievements).
guess i ll have to stick with this problem until RetroArch 1.8.9 comes out then, and hope that updating it then will fix these issues. sigh
Are you using threaded video? Turning that off might help for now.
The Android deadlock associated to multiple achievements unlocking at the same time (#10856) only occurred with threaded video. But I was able to sometimes reproduce on Linux with threaded video when unlocking multiple achievements at the same time or in close succession such that the popup was still visible while the additional achievements unlock.
Have you noticed if this is only happening for you when multiple achievements trigger at roughly the same time?
Hi, I'm running Retropie/Retroarch. I just set up Retroachievements tonight, and have experienced this lockup twice out of ~10 achievements completed so far: the "Right then...." and "I'm a super star!" achievements in the Super Mario Bros. rom. I cleared progress on "I'm a super star!" to try to reproduce the lock, but it worked on the second attempt. Neither lockup was proceeded by two achievements triggering at the same time. However, I will turn off threaded video to see if that helps (it was enabled during the lockups).
ok that is useful hopefully, i ll turn threaded video off then for the while coming, and i ve had this hanging of my systems either when unlocking two simultaneous (i was able to see two banners at the same time) or just a sec or something alike after one another, but also when having one single achievement - i dont know if this was really one single achievement, maybe it was two and the banner did not popup for the second one yet then. thanks for your response!
tried turning off threaded video on my raspberry pi 3B running batocera, the pi hung. it was on, but turning it off made the pi hang every time - hang inside the retroarch menu!... the other pc the desktop running retropie and xubuntu already has video threading turned off by default (i guess), and that system also hangs when reaching achievements. i sure hope they fix this in the next release of retroarch

I experienced the same issue on a Raspberry Pi 4 with Retropie 4.6 and it indeed showed the first achievement notification before the hang.

This is the issue highlighted by @Jamiras If you cannot update Retroarch you can avoid it disabling Graphics Widgets.
Retroarch menu --> Settings --> On-Screen Display --> On-Screen Notifications --> Graphic Widgets
I can confirm this is occurring on the switch too, version 1.8.8 of Retroarch. Crashed first 3 times I got the 1-up on Mario bros, and let me get it the 4th time. Crashed again when using a warp zone.
Disabling screenshot on achievement seems to have stopped it
Unfortunately I still have this issue. Version 1.9.0 of retroarch (stable ubuntu release) playing Parasite Eve on Playstation with the PCSX ReARMed core. It happened twice already with the same achievement: Parasite Energy - Detox (https://retroachievements.org/achievement/99928).
I realized that this happens most when the retroachievements server is unreachable (502 error).
Update: It worked the third time. I turned logging on. If it happens again I will post the log here.
The 502 error is probably a separate issue. A lot of users reported crashing during our recent downtime.
Thanks for the feedback @Jamiras . I thought it could be related because it has happened to me before in the same machine and with my raspberry pi 3B+ with retropie, just as with the OP. In the system hanging I had before, the cheevo registered in the retroachievements server, but the system hanged just as the OP described.
The only crash I had due to the 502 error was the one I reported above.
Considering the crashes regarding the 502 error, is it possible to make it so retroarch does not crash when the server is down? Maybe the cheevo could be cached so it gets sent whenever the server is back up? Should this be reported as a separate issue?
Yes, it's definitely possible. It's just difficult to test, and an unexpected problem, which is why it's not behaving as expected. I'm going to try to simulate the behavior as soon as I get a chance to see if I can at least prevent the crash.
Achievements do automatically retry for network errors, but HTTP errors usually indicate it's not worth retrying, so our stance has historically been just to report them to the user.
I too am running into this issue again. My quick fix for it was to remove the icon cache for the achievements and the issue resolved itself temporarily. I also have enabled the "screenshot on achievement" for my setup. I will also post a log here when it happens again. I have my verbose set to debug for both core and frontend. Hopefully we can isolate the the culprit. Based on similar cases it is either: The Screenshot causing the crash, the icon widget, or not being able to communicate to the servers.
Just had RetroArch crash when an achievement popped. RetroArch 1.94 + cores. The achievement actually activated on RetroArchievements so network was fine. There is no screenshot of the achievement which is suspect.
Tried again with 1.95. Got another achievement, crashed again. Awarded on RA, no screenshot.
Removed the badge cache. Got one achievements without issue. The second caused a crash.
With verbose logging on, here is another, got one achievement without issue, crashed on the next one.
[INFO] [RCHEEVOS]: Awarding achievement 3424: Mushroom Power (Get your health to the maximum.)
[INFO] [RCHEEVOS]: Captured screenshot for achievement 3424
[INFO] [RCHEEVOS]: Awarded achievement 3424
[INFO] [RCHEEVOS]: Awarding achievement 3421: Classic Jumper (Beat one level with Mario.)
(crashed, end of log)
The achievement 3421 was awarded but no screenshot exists. Points to Automatic Screenshots.
Disabled Automatic Screenshot. I've now got five achievements without issue.
The disk drive where the screenshots go has 100GB+ left. Not sure what has changed. Just this week alone I've unlocked dozens of achievements without issue.
@Jamiras can this be closed?
if you want to close this thread okay. i have not played anymore with achievements on since this occurred mainly because i didnt want to hang the system any more times.-on a raspberry this can be hazardous/fatal for the sd card / or any flash memory, and for playing with achievements on on my pc it goes actually the same. thanks anyway for all help
ill close it
@SingingCoyote13 I only want to close this if the issue has been resolved. For that I need people to test if this still happens. Just going 'OK I don't use it anymore anyway' is not helping whatsoever.
oops. sorry i did not think about that. the situation is that i do not use achievements anymore at the moment. but the others here in the thread may do and encounter the same problem if it still is present. so i reopened it - for the (other) people still having these issues. sorry guys, i was being stupid at this point so i reopened it. SO: if anyone has/still these problems and issues with the achievements : post here in this thread and specify all the details. please
I would recommend closing this anyway. It's unclear what the remaining issue is (the last few comments seem to indicate it's related to capturing the screenshot, in which case it might be fixed by #11483 or one of the issues linked to it).
If someone is still having the problem, they can create a new issue.
yes maybe. LibretroAdmin ? the last comment/post from someone having the issue is from 18 jun 2021 - it seems no one after that date encountered this, can i close it or not ? LibretroAdmin do as you see fit with this ticket. @Jamiras is right - if the issue happens again with someone, they can file another (new) post here, or view this closed one - and maybe reopen (?)
First and foremost consider this:
Description
since a couple of weeks i m plagued by a really odd bug, i can only come to think of it that retroarch is the culprit here. in the months before may this bug was not present as far as i know of. - i ll explain on my raspberry pi 3B i had retropie 4.6 installed (latest with latest updates) almost EVERY game (as far as i know of) has the problem that the computer crashes in a way you need to unplug the power, or hold the power button down to hard reset the device. this only happens when earning achievements, i get to see the badge and the description of the achievement - and the system will not respond anymore. so having this issue on the pi, i switched to a regular PC with linux Xubuntu 20.04 lts and installed retropie on that machine, with the achievements enabled. same issue. - then i thought - ¨its Retropie !". so i installed Batocera on the Pi3B, again the same problem. on all my systems after getting one or two simultaneous achievements - the system freezes and crashes needing a power button reset.
Steps to reproduce the bug
Bisect Results
before the corona crisis i used to game alot with retroachievements - no problem then somewhere a month after march - like april or may this problem popped up
