Show logo of core next to playlist entry #5858

Here is a thing I have been thinking about lately: Wouldn't it be cool if the logo of the Libretro core shows next to the names in the playlists? It would liven up some things don't you think? The logos would be stored in retroarch-assets. Maybe in a folder named "logos"? And it would probably be smart if the filenames of the logos are the same as the actual cores. ( For example, "citra_libretro.dll" = "citra_libretro.png" or "citra_libretro.ico" etc. ) Or maybe the logos could also be embedded into the core just in case it doesn't exist? Maybe the Libretro core could tell the frontend the location of the logo / icon? I also feel it should be in the place of the game cover art if it doesn't exist. It would also make it feel more like programs, because that's what Libretro cores really are :) Oh and it should probably prefer the small version of the logo if possible ( The Citra lemon, not the words. )

Badly made mockups: genius plzaddthx

Kinda like in the style of the new achievement images. I forgot to put in the Mupen64Plus logo in the mockup and probably a dozen others.

The right-hand side of the options are usually used for the Thumbnail (box, title, screenshot) of the game:

thumbs

I like the idea of replacing the Load Core and Download Core icons with the Core logos, however. Similar to what was done with the Achivement badges

anyputer commented 6 years ago

I have never seen such thing as a core thumbnail. But that's okay :)

RobLoach commented 6 years ago

Would be really cool to have the Load Core and Download Core icons show the Core icons :+1: ..... You can enable the thumbnails in the User Interface settings. Need to download some of them.

anyputer commented 6 years ago

Oh that's true, it would make it easier to find the cores! I thought thumbnails were for box art and screenshot and title screen only? cool

anyputer commented 6 years ago

And it should also have the logo when it asks for a core to open something after choosing content.

andres-asm commented 6 years ago

I think it would look very very very tacky

ghost commented 6 years ago

Not a huge fan of core-specific icons myself, but what about generic system icons (like the playlists use)? Otherwise I think it's fine the way it is.

anyputer commented 6 years ago

Whats wrong with a non-default toggle for it? I like it, RobLoach likes it so I bet others might like it too? Like RobLoach said:

Replacing the icons instead of putting it next to it looks a lot better.

RobLoach commented 6 years ago

what about generic system icons

The generic system ones from the XMB playlists would be really nice. Would provide consistency across the icons, and we already have the assets.

anyputer commented 6 years ago

Welp, there goes any chance of this being implemented. I could easily provide logos if you want.

inactive123 commented 6 years ago

Well, one thing that I want to do at first, is replace the 'default' icon of the cores inside the Core list instead of the actual thumbnail. So yeah, basically what you can see in the mockup. A big thumbnail to the right though I am not so keen on for now, but I think small icons next to the names of the cores inside the core list is fine.

I think we could have thumbnails to the right inside the Load Core list though, and also Core Updater, no issues there.

anyputer commented 6 years ago

Yeah, I agree with that it is not a good idea to to have it take up the space of the thumbnail.

anyputer commented 6 years ago

Well, I am expanding on this idea... what if we have a different logo based on the menu icon theme? Like for example Citra is going to be monochrome when Monochrome is enabled. And I will make it for you lol

thatman84 commented 5 years ago

@hyarsan did you ever get started making any of these?
