Sega Megaplay Gunstar Heroes

Well this is the nemesis i was talking about earlier if @mahoneyt944 or @MistyDreams one of ya's fancies taking a look at this sometime down the road i'd be a happy bunny so to not rabbit on here i'll only give brief description.....

The game boots up but you cant start it and if you leave the attract mode running you'll see the gfx are all messed up when you exit the game maybe once in every 20 times the gfx will appear for a mili second before the game closes and do look correct.

Bit of background

We support the Megaplay code from around MAME97 or so the games we have already are all playable however there are two we dont Grandslam Tennis and Mazin Wars as those dont work in our driver only being fixed around MAME117 or so.

However when i dropped in Shinobi III added to MAME circa 135 it worked so as since this game is also a simple drop in and is very close to Shinobi III in terms of rom loading etc etc it's strange it didn't work off the bat.

Ideas

I've tried everything to get this to work no point going over it here as this will end up like novel :) it could be like the above games our driver is simply not correct for Gunstar Heroes but unlike those this one actually boots when they dont which makes me think it could be something else.

@arcadez2003 Gunstar must have drove you crazy with wanting to figure out what is keeping it from working all the way! Being a Gunstar fan, have you ever played Silhouette Mirage for PS1? It is also made by Treasure and might as well be Gunstar Heroes ON PS1:)

I gave this game a once through.

• All the roms are loading just fine
• If you map the service and test buttons in the mame menu you can access / navigate the service menu.
• All the inputs seem to be working, rom checks pass, sound tests pass, nothing abnormal about the service menu
• we are missing the "initial players" dip switch. It should be were the "lives" dip is now, using the same values...so not the issue.
• it feels like title screen is under some type of protection not allowing the inputs to work. I did notice that newer mame uses a start1 and start2 read thats tied to the bios. So maybe it's just locked out?

Nope it doesn't work in MAME84 the segac2 driver from that core is more or less the same as MAME78 barring the usual diffs we'd expect as per the MAME79 changes

That game certainly pushes the megadrive kind of reminds me of rocket knight adventures

unmapped read from 6202 on the bios @arcadez2003 not sure if its an input read or some kind of banking would need to check that at some point

defo looks like gfx issues too much testing involved in updating though linked to loads of drivers. I dont know if i want to do a load of testing again.

Yip we likely need the changes done in order to make Grandslam Tennis and Mazin Wars playable, that would requre porting HAZEMD across from MESS and then altering the other Sega drivers which share this code to hang off it.

Far too much work for only three games let's forget such nonsense and close this down.
