Problem recognizing gamecube controller adapter via HIDAPI joysticks #5145

I'm having some issues getting SDL to recognize the GameCube Controller USB Adapter for WiiU/Switch on Arch linux.

Since this commit it has been officially supported to use said adapter with SDL.

The controller and adapter both work fine for other applications on my computer (dolphin), so I know they are not where the problem emerges from.

in this post OP goes over compiling SDL from source with the enable-hidapi flag; I have done the following, and properly installed SDL, but with no results. I do have both libusb1.0 installed, and libudev for those asking.

I have also attempted to set hint priority for both JOYSTICK_HIDAPI and JOYSTICK_HIDAPI_GAMECUBE with and without priority set to OVERRIDE like so:

Considering that other Joysticks, such as the Xbox360 wireless adapter do work with my current setup, that it is a bug specifically with either HIDAPI, or the gamecube controller USB adapter itself.

And finally some sample code to show the initialization of controllers just in case I just managed to mess something up in the initialization process.

Can you build SDL yourself and debug what's going wrong?

Yes, I can build and install SDL myself, but I have no idea how to begin debugging this issue currently.

Make sure to remove -O3 and add -g to the Makefile when building SDL, then run gdb and set a breakpoint in HIDAPI_DriverGameCube_InitDevice()

You can also define DEBUG_HIDAPI at the top of SDL_hidapijoystick.c to get more general information about what devices are detected.

Alright, I've done all that you've suggested, but there are two things I must mention:

1: I'm getting no extra info for having #define DEBUG_HIDAPI true inserted into the beginning of SDL_hidapijoystick.c, which is making me thing that it's not properly detecting the device at this point in the initialization (or I have messed up the make and install process (unlikely).)

2: I can't figure out how to get a breakpoint set in SDL_hidapi_gamecube.c for HIDAPI_DriverGameCube_InitDevice() since I need to provide the directory to the said .c file.

Will I need to port SDL directly into my target repository and build it along with my executable in order to get gdb to actually work with this? (I can't find any related info on google or in the man page for gdb sadly)

I'm more than willing to try to learn all of this, and make my favorite controller work with SDL, but this is very much outside of the usual scope of my programming expertise. I apologize for wearing thin, any patience you extend to me over this ongoing event; haha.

It sounds like HIDAPI isn't actually built into the library for some reason. Can you attach your include/SDL_config.h so we can double check that?

If it is getting built, maybe we can do some interactive debugging? Go ahead and send me e-mail at slouken@libsdl.org if you'd like to try that.

This is a very old version of SDL that doesn't have HIDAPI support. Try with the latest 2.0.18 release?

Ah, oops, I had both SDL and SDL2 installed, and I grabbed the wrong SDL_config.h file because of it. (I also uninstalled SDL to prevent further confusion)

It looks like this config was generated by CMake, so I think this just got fixed by https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/commit/0cb39ed4685473928b01682f875f7bb086fbe465
