New piece set "Julius" #13494

I created a new piece set "Julius" that is based on my shaded Merida. Yes, I know, I tried to "improve" on it a while ago and this failed due to user acceptance, but this time every piece (but the black king...) is different from Merida. You can download and compare the pieces here (OK, minor changes to the shaded Merida piece set were made on that page, but you get the idea what's the difference): https://codeberg.org/FelixKling/chess_pieces Because "shaded Merida" is quite popular, I hope this would be a nice addition to the current piece sets. The license is AGPL. image

It's basically the same thing, so I'm pretty sure that lichess wouldn't even implement "Julius" into lichess. Also you didn't even bother to change the pieces, you just changed the piece art.

Thank you for your comment, but that is actually not true - the design of the rooks is entirely new. The fact that it is similar to Merida and not a complete redesign (knights, pawns, queens and king with basically the same outline) is intentional to improve the acceptance. Actually I use them myself and when you are used to Merida, these "piece art" changes as you call them already feel like a big difference to me. If you feel otherwise, that is OK to me. What I basically tried is to create a theme where the things that I did not like about Merida are improved. So the kings have a similar detail level now, just as the queens, the rooks are not that rectangular in shape, the bishops look more like the Staunton pieces and the knights do not smile that much and their eyes look more natural. I tried some bigger changes, but they just do not feel right (like completely new kings or knights). What I would be interested in are comments about whether you think the single pieces are actually an "improvement" compared to Merida and what you do not like about the new design or where it could improve on Merida.

@DeepKling I apologize; Even though the "Julius" may be a slight piece improvement (I'm a huge fan of merida so I think Julius would be a great addition), I still think lichess would misunderstand concept art and think that "Julius" is similar to the original. The only exceptions are cburnett (lichess's original piece) and merida. The piece of art should be unique in its own way. Such as, horsey, anarcandy, kiwen-suwi and my personal favorite, disguised. I would prefer Julius over Merida in my opinion, but lichess barely implements any piece art. Lichess is very strict about what to piece art to implement so good luck!

If "Julius" does get into lichess I will use that piece set.
