if a mistake is made somewhere along the way then one has to start
over. So if i'm 2 hours into a puzzle, thats 2 hours lost. So i'd like
to have the program optionally alert me if I enter a wrong value.

what's the point? You could just try every number till you got one that didn't 
alert! No fun anymore.  I think a better feature would be to be able to "save" 
at a certain point and be able to return later after you've spent the 2 hours 
to discover you are wrong - just go back to where you saved (assuming you 
hadn't already made the blunder)
