The sheep shank is prone to fail under any load and should never be used. The alpine butterfly loop will do the same thing with the addition of adding an anchor point mid rope also several can be used to make a rope ladder.

thanks for the hint! This knot is still original from the original FielManual 3-05-70. Do you have any free black/white image of the alpine butterfly loop? Would also highly appreciate if you could edit this section of the wiki as I am really bad with knots - even my shoes don't even have knots (even though I would be able to tie this one :)
