Has this update been rolled out? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 running 4.2.2
which appears to have the latest rev of Google Play Services (July 23rd date)
but still refuses to show the cast icon.

An update to Google Play services has been pushed to Android devices that
should fix that issue. Check your phone to see if you are on v5.0.89 of Google
Play services and then retest your app.

Sorry, no cigar :(
Verified Google Play Services 5.0.89
Samsung Tab 2 7" tablet (GT-P3113) running Android 4.2.2 does not show the Cast
icon on *any* third party app, but casting from the Youtube app does work.
Nexus S running 4.1.2 seems to work fine, but it also (usually) worked fine on
earlier Google Play Services releases.
Original comment by m...@juko.fm
on 1 Aug 2014 at 8:20
Additional note: rebooting the Chromecast and the Tab 2 does not help. On the
Nexus S which runs "OK" the icon takes a long time to show up, relative to iOS,
and on occasion it "flickers" on and off, prior to device selection, when the
Chromecast is idle. Not a solid user experience.

mark@juko.fm: You need to open a different ticket for your specific device; the
issue that most folks had observed must be fixed but there can always be issues
with specific devices due to vendor's specific loads. If you choose to open a
ticket, you need to put as much information as possible about the device, its
load and logs

youtube app and missing on Netlflix and Real Player Cloud apps.
I've updated all apps with the latest version and my Google Play Services
currently the 6.1 version.
Please help me, i am disappointed with this possible bug.

My Chromecast now works only with Youtube app. Chromecast "Backdrop" says
Chromecast not found, and all other apps either fail to connect or do not show
the Cast icon.

Same here. It was working all yester day until late last night. My icon
disappeared when in fullscreen mode. I reset chromecast, rebooted. I tried
netflix and the icon did not show up either. I gave up because I couldn't
figure it out. I didn't try YouTube though. I figured if netflix didn't work,
then youtube probably wouldn't. I got up to try this morning thinking it was
my Internet connection but still does not work. Disappointed... I just bought
it. Back to watching on my laptop again...

Hi. I had the same problem as you got. Not sure if it will work permanently bit
I went to google play services and cleared my cache and then I restarted my
phone and now I can find the chromecast icon in the apps again.

Chromecast icon is not showing on my chrome web page streaming site that has
worked for some time. YouTube it is fine. This is the case with my ipad and
samsung note. Both have been working for months. Updated and rebooted
everything. Very frustrating to spend an hour and still cannot watch stream
video from any device.

The Chromecast icon often disappears from the Play Music and YouTube apps. When
this happens, I go the Chromecast app and press "Cast Screen", wait for it to
connect, then I disconnect it straight away and go back to the problem app. So
far, this has always resulted in the Chromecast icon reappearing. Of course,
this only works if you can Cast Screen. Another solution I found in Play Music
is to keep skipping to the next track until the icon eventually comes back.
