Cant cast screen in Android L from Moto g 2014 or Nexus 7

What steps will reproduce the problem>?
1.  Wont cast screen

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
cant cast screen.  Youtube etc work but wont share the screen.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
5.0 Android L

Please provide any additional information below.

When connected to Chromecast the cast screen icon is missing.  When you try to 
cast the screen from the settings in the notification bar it says no devices 
found.

This happenes on both devices running Android 5.0.  I have uninstalled and 
re-installed the app several times.  I even factory defaulted the chromecast 
and even exchanged it for another one.
