Meet twice daily, once in the morning and once closer to EOD
Morning meeting to discuss work for the day, possibly pair, or discuss any new relevant events
Later meeting to show what work has been done over the course of the day, asking questions, or looking for clarification/direction
Work with your mentor and manager to assess the backlog, identifying specific tickets that would be good for an Apprentice engineer to work on.
Ask your mentor to break these tickets into "bite-sized" tasks that can be accomplished in ~1 day.
Nicole's process for heads down work:
Utilize a pomodoro timer to timebox work to 25 minute sections. During this time, close Slack and enable Do Not Disturb to cut down on distractions. Use the 25 minutes to take an assigned task, google all the things, and work towards a solution. After the allotted time, go back to your mentor with your work and ask any additional questions to find a solution.
This exercise sharpens troubleshooting skills but also timeboxes work to minimize "banging your head against a wall" time.
This allows for a more acute vision of progress over time, ability to look back at accomplishments help combat imposter syndrome.
Use of labels and milestones can add more customization for each individual. I use labels to track how productive a day has felt. I track milestones to see how long it's taken me to close a particular task. I can then see how that time fluctuates over time.
