It looks like the steps to reproduce were left out. It's described below: I run
through the full 1.1.1 activation
process up to the actual jailbreak, at which point it throws the error.

Just wondering, did you run the pre-1.1.1 upgrade?

Yes, I ran through the entire process as detailed in the iNdependence help
files several times, and ran into this
same issue each time. After posting this issue, I successfully jailbroke the
phone manually using SSH to set up
pre-upgrade and iPHUC to apply the jailbreak.

how did you activate? although the phone can be jailbroken wont it keep you at
an
"activate iphone state"?

I attempted activation using iAsign with a backed up lockdownd and activation
keys from the Dev Team. I
unfortunately was not successful in this and in the end performed successful
activation with iNdependence.
Jailbreaking outside of iNdependence bypassed the bug presented in this ticket.

I nearly had the same issue. Went through all steps for pre-update and update
to 1.1.1. Started activation and
was asked to restart twice. iNdepedence reported Activation successfull
although the device was still deactivated.
Right after clicking away the popup a second one appeared, saying jailbreak
failed. Will try to use iDemocracy for
jailbreaking tomorrow. I'm giving up right now since I already fought 2 hours
with SSH - see #170.

I am having the exact same problem as "daniel.hollaender" above. I did the
pre-update to 1.1.1 and everything went fine. Then when I load independence
1.2.5 to
activate is reports activation success which is then followed by another popup
saying
activation failed. I downgraded to 1.0.2 using the "special downgrade" as
instructed
by indenpendence and repeated the process 3 time now. Now I'm stuck back at
1.0.2
unlocked and activated saying independence failed to pre-update saying "could
not
connect to ssh server".

UPDATE - 1.1.1 unlocked/jailbroken/activated Thanks to "sysoverride's"
directions.
Solution:
Uninstall SSH
Re-install SSH (using slide to power off/then sleep to wake method) do not use
reset
Pre-1.1.1 upgrade
Update to 1.1.1
Activate/Jailbreak 1.1.1 (using slide to power off/then sleep to awake method)
do not
use reset
Good luck.
