iphone not working after upgrade #339

I bought a sim free iphone that had the 1.0.2 operating system and was 
working fine.
I tried to upgrade to 1.1.2 using itunes. At the end of the upgrade I got 
an error message that upgrade was not successful.

On restart the phone did not accept the sim card and and requests 
activation. I can only go to the emergency call screen.
I tried calling *3001#12345#* to check the system version, I got 
a "Firware version 04.02.13_G"

What can I do to get the phone working again with my non-AT&T sim card? I 
use a windows based pc and can't run Independence.
