Malakula: missing sound #399

Open LauraWae opened 8 years ago

LauraWae commented 8 years ago

In this issue, I will keep record of the progress of adding sound that is currently missing within the Malakula languages where there IS a transcription. Wherever I found that a language that a language has no sound on the website and needs still be processed, I have put this language on the list of "Languages that need to be (maybe preselected), cleaned up and uploaded" within issue 350.

TO DO

(Nombotkote – Blacksands: one_hundred, one_thousand, shy, correct, dry, head, mouth, dog, mosquito, meat, dream, see, laugh, burn, hit, laugh, when) - as there are many words without sound, maybe the sound is wrong here, too. The transcription corresponds to my memory of the speaker's production, so I can't account for why the sound would be missing. That means that it would probably require a lot more time than I think it's worth to -- perhaps fruitlessly -- try to dig up the missing sound. I think that either means that that word will remain soundless forever or we'll just have to kill it.

That's an issue with the Bislama translation of the stimulus. "Natangora," the local leaf roofing panels, is generally referred to, precisely, as "natangora." The original stimulus, though, is "thatch" (which seems designed to elicit whatever the local/traditional roofing happens to be in any area). "Thatch" reliably elicits cognates of [ruat], though, so it's not an issue with any but the Bislama recordings.
