@AvivaShimelman Hi, Aviva. I can remember that we had no database record for this one, and the following (Taute: Benenavet). Could please give the according information to @PaulHeggarty . Thanks.

@AvivaShimelman Since this is the first time we upload revised words, could you just have a look if the "right" words are now working on the website and give some feedback? Thanks.

WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT! I know I have not given you the transcription for this file yet. That means that if you upload the sound files to the site, those files may or may not match the transcription as it appears now on the site. I'll be uploading the transcriptions today and tomorrow, but, until then, we can only test the five for which you have transcriptions already.

Ok, so I will wait for the transcriptions. That means, in general, that I will wait to upload any sound before I have not uploaded revised transcriptions.

AvivaShimelman commented 7 years ago

Right. You have the transcriptions for 5 revised recordings. I can upload the rest in batches of 3 or 4 over the next two or three days.

Feeling better, I hope. I'm running through the whole site now. I'll wait until I have all my comments together and not feed them in in trickles. One thing, though, it looks like Maraxus isn't playing.

Yesterday I created and uploaded new Excel Transcription sheets for the 20 or so new Malakula languages. About 5 or so were missing, however, because their 00-99 codes were problematic or missing. Aviva has now corrected all the problems.

I have now also just added the new/corrected 00-99 codes that were previously missing, so the five or so of the last batch of new languages that were not yet in the database are now in, and online.

(We have a potential naming problem with new languages called xxx 2., which may throw up some difficulties later. We'll see, but please double check that all such cases are working properly on the site, as the sound files and transcriptions get uploaded.)

I have now also added the missing languages to 2017 03 08 Complete Transcriptions Malakula 215 - Rgn 12 - New February 2017-B.xls, and put it on OwnCloud, so the transcriptions for those languages too can be put up online.

So as far as I understand, we now have:

I'm guessing that I'm not calling attention to something that isn't already recognized: It looks like some languages (mostly in the south) have lost transcriptions and some others (scattered about) have lost sound. There is at least one that's disappeared: Naha'ai Toman Island.

Just to say that this is looking great, the promise that lots more languages will soon be ready to go on the website. I hope you now at last have (almost?) all of the info you need to identify which language is which!

AvivaShimelman commented 7 years ago

I think we do. That last set of sheets was beautiful.

I have tagged and extracted now all the files from Aviva's folder ownCloud\163 selected recordings\Selected recordings.

I will start uploading them now.

PaulHeggarty commented 7 years ago

Wow, so can we watch the sound files for the new languages going up live? ;)

LauraWae commented 7 years ago

Have a try ;) : Neverver: Limap: http://soundcomparisons.com/#/en/Malakula/language/Neverver%3A%20Limap Fifit: Malmbor: http://soundcomparisons.com/#/en/Malakula/language/Fifti%3A%20Malmbor Ngata: Taremb: http://soundcomparisons.com/#/en/Malakula/language/Ngata%3A%20Taremb

(We only have that few words for this language, see Aviva's comment on #372:

"Indeed, it is only four minutes long. It's a fragment from a recently-extinct language. That's all the man could remember from his childhood. (And, frankly, I'm not confident that he wasn't mixing it with Nasarian, but he was very cautious and wouldn't commit to any word he wasn't sure of and the phonology is consistent and consistent in its distance from Nasarian).")

PaulHeggarty commented 7 years ago

:)

AvivaShimelman commented 7 years ago

An abundance of riches! I'd like to manipulate the L and Ls a bit so that all the languages are clickable on the map. Good?

Yes, it needs to be done on the Languages Reference sheet. Can’t guarantee it will always work, though, given the way the website programme decides to place its bubbles. (That needs improving in any case, but when Hans-Jörg will get the time, I know not.)
