SKOS annotaion properties can be used to store there general descriptions. If a semantically more precise representation of the different notions is expected, it is an important work and we suggest to study that question in the framework of future XKOS evolutions.
In general statistical classifications are accompanied by general descriptions which provide detailed information about the classification: abbreviation, status, custodian, domain covered, validity dates, number and names of levels, methodological description, statistical unit(s) used, etc. Some of this information is already covered by the XKOS specification (e.g. xkos:covers, xkos:numberOfLevels, xkos:follows, xkos:supersedes), some not. Wouldn't it be good for exhaustivity sake and future visualisation purposes to also include these general properties in the specification.
The two main templates for describing classifications are the ones used by the United Nations and Eurostat. Below are two examples of such general descriptions
