I can report exactly the same issue on a Surface Laptop 3 (Intel), using NixOS and kernel version 6.8.6.
I think the interesting part is:

Rolling back to 6.7.9 works fine, and I found that it seems that the power button only works with quo/ithc-linux explicitly installed and with kernel version 6.7.9.

Not a massive issue for me since I tend to just shutdown with waybar whenever I finish working (since boot is so fast), but it's definitely a recent bug since I recall the power button working when I originally set up the kernel a couple of months ago.
Seems like the same issue exists also on the SP8. But in addition to the powerbutton, I also have no volume controls from the hardware buttons on the device itself (Keyboard works fine).
Suspend also seems kinda wonky, even through systemctl suspend
. It sometimes refuses to wake back up.
The lid switch does show up though and seems to work.
I can confirm that reverting back to 6.7.9 fixes the sleep issue. I've pushed a version of nixos-hardware using 6.7.9 here if anyone wants to use it.
Simply update your flakes and make nixos-hardware
point to github:massix/nixos-hardware/fix/surface-kernel-6.7.9

The power button seems not to be recognized by the system at all: it's not only not listed in
evtest
, but also absent indmesg

systemctl suspend
can suspend, while closing the lid switch does not, and exits suspending instead.The suspend/hibernate part of this issue may be related to #1412. Search on the problems in the issue also found #595, #316, and #jakeday/linux-surface#243.
