Does the camera work on SP7? #1425

I'm thinking of buying a used SP7 just to run Debian but I am a little worried about camera support... Not something I need, I just like it in some cases

According to the feature matrix (linked here: https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Supported-Devices-and-Features#feature-matrix), it appears that there is no camera support for SP7 yet.

Moreover, camera support seems to be a work in progress for many of the listed devices right now. You can find more detailed information about their ongoing work on that here: https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Camera-Support

It looks like the older devices might be getting camera support first.

(EDIT: or they may already have it? I have an SP4 running Ubuntu and I think mine should already have camera support but I've had some difficulty following the instructions to get it to work. I'll have to follow up on that later in a separate thread.)

I hope you found this helpful! :)

I had a SP7 some time ago, cameras didn't work back then, like noted in the feature matrix... I've heard that they are quite hard to support, so I wouldn't expect a patch soon...

I'm on a SP8 right now, and no cameras either (including the Windows Hello IR cams).

This is a good project but I wouldn’t buy a Surface laptop just to run Linux. There are more well supported laptops.
