Laptop Go is listed as SLG on the table: https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Supported-Devices-and-Features#feature-matrix
The battery status is marked as not working there but I think it should be an easy fix, we're probably just missing some IDs in surface-aggregator. I forgot to mention this when the acpidump was submitted.
/cc @qzed can you tell if it's using SAM based on the dump?
EDIT: Yeah it seems to be using SAM with no BAT definitions.
@Lusito Can you provide us the output of ls -l /sys/bus/acpi/devices
and ls -l /sys/bus/platform/devices
?
@archseer Yep, you're correct. Seems to use SAM but without the ACPI/SAN interface.
@Lusito Can you run
find /sys/bus/platform/devices/ -name "MSHW*" -exec echo -n '{}: ' \; -exec cat {}/firmware_node/path \;
Also \cc @Quang19992 since you've submitted the Laptop Go acpidump.
@qzed It's interesting that they don't seem to use the HID interface over SAM for the keyboard, like they do for the Laptop 1, 2 and 3 though. I was betting it would be similar to those devices, but maybe it's more based on Go hardware.
@archseer @qzed @Quang19992
Here you go:
@archseer Yeah, I saw the reddit post about the keyboard working and though this was a normal Go type device, with everything handled the standard way since the keyboard apparently worked. So didn't bother to have a closer look at the DSDT back then... It's the first Go device with an EC (or at least with one accessible).
@Lusito Thanks! I'll update the Surface Aggregator module for you to try.
@Lusito I've pushed a branch to https://github.com/linux-surface/surface-aggregator-module/tree/feature/slg1. Can you run
git clone https://github.com/linux-surface/surface-aggregator-module.git --branch feature/slg1
then cd surface-aggregator-module/module
and follow the instructions at https://github.com/linux-surface/surface-aggregator-module/wiki/Testing-and-Installing#buildtest-the-modules to build and test the module?
After you've loaded it, you should see the battery status. Can you then also check if you can change the performance mode? I.e. with surface-control
installed, run surface performance get
, surface performance set 2
(should be different than what the get
parameter returned, if that returned 2, try 1 as argument), and surface performance get
again (that should now show the one you've set last.
@qzed I just tried the new module now ACPI can get the batter status
$acpi
Battery 0: Discharging, 95%, 04:34:03 remaining
About the surface control
#surface performance get
Performance-mode is 'Normal' (1)
#surface performance set 2
Performance-mode set to 'Battery-Saver'
#surface performance get
Performance-mode is 'Battery-Saver' (2)
#surface performance set 1
Performance-mode set to 'Normal'
#surface performance get
Performance-mode is 'Normal' (1)
Perfect, looks like it's working. Merged to master. Thanks!
You can install the module for now, if you want. I'll include the these changes in the next release.
I get this when running make insmod:
insmod: ERROR: could not insert module surface_aggregator.ko: File exists
.
Should I have done this without linux-surface installed?
You'll need to unload the modules first by running make modprobe-unload
.
That causes a different error:
surface-aggregator-module/module/../scripts/ssam-modprobe: line 6: 8187 Killed ${cmd} surface_aggregator_registry
modprobe: FATAL: Module surface_aggregator is in use.
make: *** [Makefile:72: modprobe-unload] Error 1
surface-aggregator-module/module/../scripts/ssam-modprobe: line 6: 8187 Killed
that line is odd, did you Ctrl-C or terminate the script in any way? The rest (modprobe: FATAL: Module surface_aggregator is in use.
) seems to be caused by this.
I did no such thing (knowingly). Just tried again with a different result:
modprobe: ERROR: could not remove 'surface_aggregator_registry': Device or resource busy
modprobe: FATAL: Module surface_aggregator is in use.
make: *** [Makefile:72: modprobe-unload] Error 1
When is the next release scheduled to be released? Maybe I should just wait for that.
When is the next release scheduled to be released?
Probably in a week or so.
Did you reboot after your previous tries?
No, but I did just now and now both commands work, however after unload and insmod:
surface performance set 2 ±[master]
Error: Cannot access device.
Permission denied (os error 13).
Ah, I needed to run these with sudo it seems. Works now. acpi command shows battery percentage as well.
Yeah, you'll normally need root permissions to change that. You can add a udev rule to give any user permission, if you want: https://github.com/linux-surface/surface-control#installing (or do something more elaborate by adding a group).
I see, thanks for the support!
Gnome UI seems to pick up battery level as well. Is the surface cli the only way to change performance modes? Otherwise I might take a look at how much work it would be to create gnome extension for this.
Is the surface cli the only way to change performance modes?
At the moment, yes. (Edit: Or rather the sysfs attribute it uses. The surface
tool is just a front-end for that.)
Otherwise I might take a look at how much work it would be to create gnome extension for this.
I wouldn't start that at this point (unless you really want to, of course). There is a proposal for a new kernel API currently in discussion, that aims to unify all those "platform profile" settings from different vendors (https://www.spinics.net/lists/platform-driver-x86/msg23954.html). Once that's been accepted, I'll update the performance mode driver to use that. I believe Gnome should pick up support for this fairly quickly (Bastien Nocera is already working on a prototype https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/hadess/power-profiles-daemon/-/merge_requests/41).
Looking forward to that. Thanks. Do you have any idea how to test the performance modes for actual difference (rather than just seeing a number change)?
Switching to batter saver on windows windows reduces cpu speeds to ~1.1ghz when watching a video
When I try this on Linux using this as an inspector, It doesn't seem to change anything when I change the performance mode using the surface command:
watch -n.1 "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep \"^[c]pu MHz\""
Also, the power modes on windows are in a different order than the ones on Linux, not sure if relevant:
OS | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
---|---|---|---|---|
windows | Batter saver | Recommended | Better performance | Best performance |
linux | Normal | Batter Saver | Better Performance | Best Performance |
Edit: I do notice a fan-speed increase when using performance mode 4 on linux. No cpu frequency changes though.
Performance modes mostly affect cooling, on the SB2, for example, this can be observed by stress-testing the dGPU (fan does not ramp up if in "battery saver" or "normal mode", only gets to full speed in "best performance" mode). They shouldn't influence the CPU speed at all (except for side-effects/throttling by less cooling), this is something that you should do via other tools (e.g. cpufreq).
The values are directly as sent to the EC, Windows just orders them in a logical way, while the Linux driver currently doesn't re-map them and just forwards them.
I see, thanks.
New kernels (v5.10.2 on Arch/Debian, v5.9.16 on Fedora) with SLGo battery support are currently building and should be available tomorrow at latest.
I'm still not seeing that update. Maybe I'm missing something? I would have assumed, it should show automatically when checking for updates using Manjaros software updater pamac.
Can you give me the output of uname -a
?
Linux lusito-surfacelaptopgo 5.10.1-arch1-1-surface #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed, 16 Dec 2020 16:28:59 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Hmm, you should be able to see the update then. v5.10.2 is in the Arch repo. Can you try with pacman -Syyu
?
yep, that did the trick. Thanks.
Just to clarify (and, apologies for bumping) - does this mean that the battery status for the Surface Laptop Go is in the mainline Linux kernel, or is this only for linux-surface
? And, if it is in the mainline kernel, then should the feature matrix be updated?
@shavs It's not in mainline yet (unless stated explicitly that it's mainline, any feature updates mentioned here are only for the kernel we ship). It's expected to be there in v5.13.
Ah, OK! Thanks for clarifying. 😀
How can I get this solved for Surface Laptop Go 3? I am running linux mint
Battery status is not shown. I'm not using this project yet, as I'm not sure it will work (as the wiki doesn't list it as supported). If I can provide you additional information, let me know.
