On the SB2 (which should be pretty similar to the SP5 in that regard) bluetooth seems to work fine on Arch (bluez 5.59), for me at least (I can use both the pen button and a bluetooth mouse).
I also don't see any errors in the 5.12.12 log, it just looks like the line that's present in the 5.12.10 log (indicating that the pen is being connected) isn't there in the newer log. Did you try reverting back to 5.12.10 to make sure it's really the kernel causing this vs. some other package upgrade?
I noticed that problem first when I tried to connect a bluetooth headset. I then restarted the Surface with the 5.12.10 kernel and the headset was working.
I then started to investigate. I started the Surface Pro 3 (it starts straight into X) and selected a rectangle with the pen. Then I tried to do the same with the eraser. Usually the pen connects automatically, but did not in this case. Then I started a terminal and did sudo dmesg > dmesg-5.12.12
.
Afterwards I restarted the Surface and selected the 5.12.10 kernel in the boot menu. I did the same (select a triangle with the pen and then with the eraser and finally saved the dmesg
output).
I also noticed that there is not much difference in the dmesg
output. .xsession-errors
did not reveal anything either.
Any other ideas, what I should/could test?
Hmm, maybe bluetoothctl
is able to show something? Or maybe try removing and newly pairing devices via that (instead of Gnome/some other GUI, I've found the Gnome one to sometimes be a bit buggy).
journalctl might also be able to show more errors (e.g. if they come from the bluez daemon).
And regarding the eraser, all that bluetooth is used for on that is the button, so drawing/selecting something with that should work without bluetooth. To test bluetooth with that you'll have to use something like evtest, listen to the "Pen Keyboard" device, and press the pen button.
I now observed the problem for some time and noticed these behaviours: Bluetooth is not working with 5.12.10 (rare events) and Bluetooth is working with 5.12.12 (when it started it never worked, now it works most of the time). I am out of my wits, why this happened in the first place and now why it is not happening most of the time. I also feel a bit stupid :confused:
I'll close this, if that's ok.
After upgrading (.deb packages) from 5.12.10 to 5.12.12, I cannot connect any bluetooth device. I tried it with the Stylus/Eraser and with a headset. Neither connecting an already known device nor pairing an unknown one works.
