Can you try to run and post the output of the following two commands?
ls -l /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_sam_ssh
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid
ls -l /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_sam_ssh
total 0
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:31 bind
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 21 00:31 module -> ../../../../module/surface_sam_ssh/
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:20 uevent
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:31 unbind
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid
total 0
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:31 bind
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 21 00:31 module -> ../../../../module/surface_sam_sid/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 21 00:31 MSHW0116:00 -> ../../../../devices/platform/MSHW0116:00/
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:20 uevent
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:31 unbind
What about
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery
total 0
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 09:39 bind
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 21 09:39 module -> ../../../../module/surface_sam_sid_power/
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 00:20 uevent
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 21 09:39 unbind
So it looks like the driver is loaded but doesn't attach to the device. Can you reload the module (sudo modprobe - r surface_sam_sid_power && sudo modprobe surface_sam_sid_power
) and see if that changes anything? Is there anything interesting in the dmesg log when doing this?
I have typed commands below.
sudo dmesg --clear
sudo modprobe -r surface_sam_sid_power && sudo modprobe surface_sam_sid_power
sudo dmesg
But nothing was output.
Does doing this change anything in the output of ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery
?
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery
total 0
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 23 15:04 bind
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 23 15:04 module -> ../../../../module/surface_sam_sid_power/
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 23 15:04 uevent
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan 23 15:04 unbind
It looks same as the before one.
Okay, that's a bit odd. It should auto-probe which it doesn't seem to do. Can you try running
echo -n surface_sam_sid_battery | sudo tee /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery/bind
If that doesn't work there should at least be some output or something in dmesg.
The output was
surface_sam_sid_batterytee: /sys/bus/platform/drivers/surface_sam_sid_battery/bind: No such device
And, there was nothing new in dmesg.
Okay, interesting. That indicates that it can't find the battery device. Can you check if that exists via
ls -l /sys/bus/platform/devices/
This should contain surface_sam_sid_battery
and surface_sam_sid_ac
.
It seems to include surface_sam_sid_battery
and surface_sam_sid_ac
.
To be honest, I have no idea what's going wrong or why. To summarize:
No such device
(https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/issues/53#issuecomment-578023722), even though the devices are there (see https://lwn.net/Articles/143397/ for more info on manual driver binding).Have you tried re-installting the kernel yet? Maybe try 4.19 and see if that changes something.
This bug also affects me. Battery status was working for me before with this kernel. Last week I was using Windows and received a few Windows Updates. After that it stopped working.
I see that the battery driver returns ENODEV
if it can't check the battery status. This ends up talking to the device.
I wonder if Microsoft changed something in the battery firmware that caused it to not be recognized anymore.
Hmm, I think this would make sense. Can you load the module and upload what's printed in dmesg when it tries to probe (you'll need to use the module-version for that due to debug output, or alternatively add a printk for the state returned by sam_psy_get_sta
)?
I traced the problem to surface_sam_ssh_probe
.
dmesg.txt 0001-debug.patch.txt
I had trouble using the "module-version" so I went with printk.
It turns out spwr_battery_register
which calls sam_psy_get_sta
itself isn't even being called. It only gets as far as returning an ENXIO
in surface_sam_sid_battery_probe
. This is after calling surface_sam_ssh_consumer_register
.
surface_sam_ssh_consumer_register
never succeeds in getting the ec
struct. This is because the struct isn't initialized.
It seems like surface_sam_ssh_probe
is supposed to initialize ec
, but that entire method never gets called.
There is a problem detecting the serial hub.
# ls -l /sys/bus/serial/devices
total 0
# ls -l /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_sam_ssh/
total 0
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Feb 2 01:17 bind
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 2 01:17 module -> ../../../../module/surface_sam_ssh
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Feb 1 19:36 uevent
--w------- 1 root root 4096 Feb 2 01:17 unbind
It appears in Windows but in Linux it's as if it doesn't exist.
Oh, I somehow missed that SSH wasn't probing... yeah that will cause all SSH-dependent devices to fail probing as well (so pretty much every SAM driver).
Since you mentioned windows updates: Maybe the ID of the device has changed. Can you check that MSHW0084
exists in /sys/bus/acpi/devices
and can you upload a DSDT so I can compare it with the one that I currently have?
MSHW0084
does indeed exist.
I just got another Windows Update. The ID is the same but there are two changes to the SSH section.
Okay, I can't see any differences of your first DSDT to the DSDT that I have, and the changes in your second DSDT shouldn't affect probing (the changes to SSH basically add a new DSM call method, and we don't use that anyways).
Can you post a dmesg log (booting the device up)? I think normally there should be some tty/serial/serdev messages when a serial device is detected. have you updated your kernel lately (maybe some change causes the serdev to not be instantiated/recognized any more)?
I installed this version on 2019-12-27.
It was working back then, and it isn't working anymore. The only things that might have affected it are Ubuntu and Windows updates.
I built this one yesterday to add the printk
statements. It's based off of the v5.4-surface
branch at that time.
For my case I found the problem after comparing my dmesg to my last working one at #30. Somehow I have modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci
and I needed to remove it again. Now battery status is working for me.
@kob4lt Does it also work for you if you remove that parameter?
Right, I completely forgot about the intel_lpss_pci
issue... that makes total sense. Thanks for figuring that out!
@danielzgtg @qzed
Sorry for late, but I did succeeded in making battery status displayed by removing modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci
from the boot parameter.
Thank you so much!!

@qzed @kjuq @danielzgtg Please tell me in which file I need to delete this line.
@RomanovaDI If you have this set, that should be part of your kernel command line (e.g set in /etc/default/grub
if you're using grub).
Are you sure you have this set though? That parameter is an old workaround for a problem that no longer exists, so I'd be a bit surprised. Maybe you can give us a bit more detail on the problem you're having?

@qzed I have a problem displaying the battery level in Ubuntu 20.04 installed on a Microsoft Surface Pro 7. I tried to fix this using the instructions above, but I couldn't find a suggested parameter. I also have a problem with the touchscreen of this device in Ubuntu.
What's the output of uname -a
?
uname -a

Okay, the -generic
indicates that this is the stock kernel (i.e. the kernel that ships with Ubuntu). Can you try and boot into the -surface
kernel? You should be able to choose the kernel in the bootloader (under Advanced options
if you're using grub).

I don't have -surface kernel just another version of generic (5.4.0-42-generic)
Ah, in that case you should probably have a look at https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Installation-and-Setup#surface-kernel-installation. In short, you'll need to install the patched kernel for the battery status and touch to work.

I installed surface-kernel and now everything is working well, thank you very much!
Hi qzed,
I wrote on https://gitter.im/linux-surface/support but I don't know if it was the good place.
As RomanovaDI, I have a problem displaying the battery level in linux Mint 20.1 installed on a Microsoft Surface Pro 7.

Touchscreen works well. But nothing on battery status.
I saw also I don't have surface_sam_ssh drivers. ls -l /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_sam_ssh ls: impossible d'accéder à '/sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_sam_ssh': Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
And if I do: sudo modprobe - r surface_sam_sid_power && sudo modprobe surface_sam_sid_power modprobe: FATAL: Module - not found in directory /lib/modules/5.12.8-surface

That's a bit outdated, the driver is now named surface_serial_hub
(so /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_serial_hub
should exist). Can you also check if /sys/bus/serial/devices
has any directories under it (and post them)?
Thanks, ls -la /sys/bus/serial/drivers/surface_serial_hub total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 oct. 20 2020 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 oct. 20 2020 .. --w------- 1 root root 4096 juin 5 20:49 bind lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 juin 5 20:49 module -> ../../../../module/surface_aggregator --w------- 1 root root 4096 oct. 20 2020 uevent --w------- 1 root root 4096 juin 5 20:49 unbind

Can you upload a dmesg log as well?
Hmm okay, can't see any errors, so might me something a bit more complex. Can you open a new issue for that and there post the output of ls -l /sys/bus/pci/drivers/intel-lpss/
and ls -l /sys/bus/pci/drivers/intel-lpss/*/
?
Hello. I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 on my Surface Pro 7 yesterday. Most of functions correctly worked. I'd like to appreciate you and this community. However, battery status isn't displayed. When I open
Settings
->Power
, there is no information about battery. According to feature matrix, battery status should be supported even on Surface Pro 7. Could someone give me an advice?Environment
