Since lspci
shows the GPU, I assume it's a driver issue. Did you install the DKMS version (should be nvidia-dkms-<version>
on Ubuntu, I think)? If so, did that succeed? You can check that with sudo dkms status
.

I just googled for a solution to this but got confused. How should I get the correct version of nvidia dkms? Do I need to uninstall the linux-surface kernel and start over again?
I kinda suspected this: The driver packaged by Ubuntu doesn't support the newer kernel versions. The problem is that Ubuntu generally uses older kernels and thus doesn't check for compatibility of packages with newer ones. As far as I can tell, the latest driver version packaged by Ubuntu is 470 (which should also be the latest version published by nvidia), so you could try installing nvidia-dkms-470
. If that doesn't work you'll probably have to search for a "backports" version.

Did you install the headers (linux-headers-surface
)? You need those for any DKMS package.

Hmm, I've just checked and the headers package does contain the include/generated/autoconf.h
file, so if you've installed that I'm not sure why it's going with that message. Can you try again after re-booting?

The more important line is this one (if it exists):

That file contains the log for actually building the module for the specific kernel version. I'm not sure if the "ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-5.14.6-surface is not supported
line just always gets printed if the module build fails or if that's an additional check/whitelist-type thing.
Looking at that one again I don't think it fails due to a missing file (which I thought before). That's just some shell code in the makefile that gets printed (due to that echoing everything it executes) but the actual check in that code doesn't trigger. And in that log I don't really see where it's going wrong. If there was an actual build failure, I think we should see some more errors in that file. Is that all from that file?
I think it might be possible that the log file path isn't displayed correctly since it's missing a kernel version and thus might get overwritten by builds for other versions. On my Arch system, there's a log file for the specific kernel version at
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/<driver_version>/<kernel_version>/<kernel_architecture>/log/make.log
which is symlinked to
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/<kernel_version>-<kernel_architecture>/log/make.log
Can you check if any of those files exist? The <driver_version>
should be 470.57.02
, the <kernel_version>
should containing something like 5.14.6-surface
and <kernel_architecture>
should be x86_64
.
At this point though I think it fails due to incompatibility with the kernel, likely some code that the driver relies on has changed in newer kernel versions. On Arch I currently have version 470.74
, which seems to work with the v5.14 kernels, so you might need to wait for an update.

I assume that the 470.74 version works (unless the Arch guys have patched that one), so waiting for the package to be updated is probably your best option. You can try to manually install the driver from the official nvidia page, but I wouldn't recommend it since it's not a proper package (meaning it might cause you some more headaches down the line).

On my previous installations these days, my dGPU worked fine.
But when I tune everything and found I forgot to install GPU driver, NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

Hi, I just followed the direction to install Linux-surface on my machine. It looks like my Nvidia GPU can't be detected(while the normal Linux kernel has no problem detecting it). Have tried surface dgpu set-runtime-pm ON and still doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.
