Be Aware #18

Open Ressy66 opened 8 years ago

Under Be Aware: "the individuals may be told to apologise" "the individuals may be told to stop/modify their behaviour appropriately"

Firstly, you may not "tell" someone to do anything, you may however "ask" that they cease or modify any inappropriate behavior.

Secondly, you may not "tell" or even "ask" someone to apologise, you are not primary school teachers looking after grade one kids, in most (but not all) cases an apology would usually be volunteered to the offended person upon realising they have seriously offended them, if they don't offer one, you can neither demand ("tell") or request they do so.

Hi @Ressy66, thanks for your feedback on the Code of Conduct.

Could I suggest the following amendments;

the individuals may be told to apologise becomes "the individuals may be requested to apologise"

the individuals may be told to stop/modify their behaviour appropriately becomes "the individuals may be directed to stop and/or modify their behaviour appropriately" - as it's not a question, or a request, it's an instruction.

Kind regards, Kathy

I'll give you the second one, yes that's more appropriate, but the first, no, it really should be completely omitted.

These are (99.9+%) adults we are talking about, asking an adult to apologise sounds like schoolyard mentality, as adults we have no place to tell or ask someone to apologise, if the person being cautioned for bad behavior/bullying doesnt "man up" and apologise there is nothing anyone can do - except lower our opinions of that person, leading to less trust, less future inclusions and so on, but one suspects we wouldnt want much to do with that type of person anyway.

If one is informed they have seriously offended someone, they should offer an apology to that person without interactions or prompting, it's what we do in normal life, so again, it really does sound " childish" and unprofessional to have such a point in any CoC that consists of adults, or mostly adults.
