Bug description

This error occurs after installations on Mint Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce. After install, and when you open the Update Manager, then refresh the list of updates Button, the update manager states that a new version of the update manager is to be installed. Once you click Ok, the update manager Crashes, and signs you out of your session, requiring to enter your password to get back in. When you open the update manager again, a message is produced and it states to switch to another mirror (other than the default US & UK mirrors), because the Apt cache is corrupt.

Steps to reproduce

1.) Install new copy of LM Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce from HeAnet Ireland. 2.) Reboot and open Update Manager via the icon on the bottom right of the taskbar. 3.) Decline Blue banner asking to switch to a local mirror. 4.) Refresh the list of updates (Circular Icon w/ refresh label on the top icon list). 5.) Notice message stating a new version of Update Manager is Available, and press Ok in the dialog box. 6.) Watch in Disconcerting panic as suddenly the Update Manager crashes and signs you out of your session. 7.) Log back in and view error messages.

Expected behavior

1.) Install new copy of LM Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce from HeAnet Ireland. 2.) Reboot and open Update Manager via the icon on the bottom right of the taskbar. 3.) Decline Blue banner asking to switch to a local mirror. 4.) Refresh the list of updates (Circular Icon w/ refresh label on the top icon list). 5.) Notice message stating a new version of Update Manager is Available, and press Ok in the dialog box. 6.) Update manager installs, auto-refreshes the cache, and allows normal operational install of packages in part or whole.

Additional information

This error occurs after installations on Mint Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce. After install, and when you open the Update Manager, then refresh the list of updates Button, the update manager states that a new version of the update manager is to be installed. Once you click Ok, the update manager Crashes, and signs you out of your session, requiring to enter your password to get back in. When you open the update manager again, the above message is produced and it states to switch to another mirror (other than the default US & UK mirrors), because the Apt cache is corrupt. Error message displays:

E: Could not open file - open (2: No such file or directory) E: Problem opening E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

If you restart your system, sign in, and open the Update Manager again, it states that an error has ocurred and gives a line of terminal code to enter to restart the Apt cache, as per this message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

When you enter the line of code in the terminal, this is the output:

'$ sudo dpkg --configure -a [sudo] password for xeno:
Setting up mintupdate (6.0.9) ... The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=, Also=, Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.

Possible reasons for having this kind of units are: • A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's .wants/ or .requires/ directory. • A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has a requirement dependency on it. • A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer, D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...). • In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some instance name specified. Processing triggers for mailcap (3.70+nmu1ubuntu1) ... Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.26+mint3+victoria) ... Processing triggers for hicolor-icon-theme (0.17-2) ... Processing triggers for gnome-menus (3.36.0-1ubuntu3) ... Processing triggers for libglib2.0-0:amd64 (2.72.4-0ubuntu2.2) ... Processing triggers for man-db (2.10.2-1) ...'

When you do this and restart the update manager, everything SEEMS normal otherwise.
