Cinnamon doesn't properly display during session #3213

I've installed Linux Mint 17, x86_64 Cinnamon edition with a USB drive. Default install with ethernet plugged in, no proprietary drivers selected or reported through driver manager. Base install, everything worked fine but background would have a smaller overlay on top. I updated all the packages (145 at the time) with the update manager and restarted. I could login fine, background was no longer being overlayed while loading. Then cinnamon would turn black with only a cursor. Dmesg would reported a seg fault with my video drivers. Someone also mentioned to add 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"' to /etc/default/grub thinking it was an ACPI issue. It made no difference. I tried manually starting a session with startx and it worked but the background would overlay and cinnamon would stay confined in the overlay. It didn't do that before installing updates.

Have you tried to set the resolution settings with either the Control Panel, or by writing a configuration file in /etc/X11/xorg.d/ ?

I haven't had any more success in getting cinnamon to display like before. It refuses to display windows. Alt+F2 is invisible, it just tints the screen. I type firefox and nothing appears but a quick Alt+Tab shows it's running.

Interesting, I've installed mint-meta-mate and same thing happened. I guess it's not specific to cinnamon.

I've installed Debian 7.5.0 which uses older packages with no issues. I tried Linux Mint 17 and 16, cinnamon and mate, same issues. I tried OpenSUSE with KDE, same issue. Background overlay and no task bar. This problem isn't related to cinnamon but rather a much bigger problem.
