I tried XSANE. It starts by announcing that it’s scanning for devices. Then is says if found no devices.

Have you tried installing XSANE or Simple Scan?

There are no instructions for adding a Scanner (e.g. a dedicated scanner that is not part of a printer).
The instructions state "To scan a document open Document Scanner from the application menu." There is no Document Scanner application under the application menu.
The instructions state "The HP drivers are called HPLIP. They are open-source and they are installed by default in Linux Mint. As a result, most HP printers and scanners work out of the box and don’t require you to install any additional drivers." I believe this is false. I installed two HP printers, each of which has a scanner: HP LaserJet M2727nf (an old multi-function printer) and HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dn. Neither printer shows up under scanners once Master PDF Editor is installed.
