Chromium - replace Debian pinning with Bionic pinning instructions #4

Closed smurphos closed 3 years ago

Hi,

As per https://github.com/linuxmint/doc-user-guide/issues/1 the Debian pinning instructions result in a situation that on the first apt upgrade results in a number of packages being apparently downgraded. Whilst I think this is in fact harmless it is likely to disconcert users. I don't think this can be avoided.

The Bionic pinning instructions don't have this issue.

A slightly negative observations with the Bionic pinning rules in place.

It is possible to search for and find entries for packages that are in the bionic repo and not the focal repo in synaptic, software manager and with apt show or apt search on the command line. Pinned at -10 they can't be installed without specifying the version. Software Manager's behaviour in particular may cause support requests / bug reports - e.g. you can search for and it will find shutter (popular screenshot tool dropped in Focal), but then Software manager will just sit indefinitely with the loading animation over the install / remove button area.

Same applies to snapd out of the box mind so perhaps this is something that should be fixed in Software Manager so it displays an informative output for negatively pinned packages.
