I'm running a VivoBook Asus laptop with an Intel Celeron N4020 CPU (1.10 GHz x2), 4Gb of memory, 100Gb disk space, with an Intel GeminiLake (UHD 600) built-in graphics card. It's 2 years old. Both the latest versions of Mint and Debian installed on it just fine.
Does it continue if you reply NO to the dialog when it asks to wipe it?
Answering 'No' to the first prompt:
This will delete all the data on mmcblk0 (62 GB) (/dev/mmcblk0). Are you sure?
...merely closes the prompt. No output appears in the Terminal.
Answering 'No' to the second prompt:
No partition table was found on the hard drive: mmcblk0boot0 (4MB). Do you want the installer to create a set of partitions for you? Note: This will ERASE ALL DATA present on the disk.
...closes the prompt and opens a third prompt:
No partition table was found on the hard drive: mmcblk0boot1 (4MB). Do you want the installer to create a set of partitions for you? Note: This will ERASE ALL DATA present on the disk.
Answering 'No' opens a new screen, "Advanced options, configure the boot menu". From there I can click 'Next' three more times and it'll begin installing.
It went through the whole installation process, and when I agreed to restart my computer it pulled up the:
Remove the installation media and press ENTER to continue...
...however pressing 'Enter' doesn't do anything, and I had to hard shutdown.
Booting from there I seem to be in a proper install of the system. lsblk
shows that I have a mmcblk0
, mmcblk0p1
, mmcblk0p2
, mmcblk0p3
, and mmcblk0boot0
and mmcblk0boot1
. I'm not sure if that's intended or not.
Those two partitions it failed to erase were only created as part of the default install of Mint 21.2.
@IfGremlinThen can you test again? We pushed a fix in live-installer 2023.09.18
but we can't make sure the bug is gone (we've no eMMC hardware here). We'd love it if you could verify the fix for us.
Here are the steps to try the fix:
apt update
apt install live-installer
sudo live-installer
Those two prompts to address mmcblk0boot0 & mmcblk0boot1 no longer appear after the initial "are you sure you want to wipe your device?" prompt, so the installer didn't close itself.
After installing, the "remove the installation medium and click ENTER to restart" message didn't hang either. I messed around in the new install afterwards and didn't immediately notice anything out of place. lsblk
shows all the same partitions as before.
I did notice a lot of errors during installation though, so I'll share those, but otherwise the issue in question appears to be tentatively resolved.
Cool, I'll close this.
I noticed microcode pkgs were still trying to install.. I'll fix that as well.
Downloaded the Beta ISO by torrent and flashed it to a USB via BalenaEtcher. I'm able to boot into the Live USB like normal and the installer loads and guides me through setup like normal up to and until it asks me to select a drive to format.
I've tried both Automatic and Manual, and each time I select a drive, it asks if I'm doubly sure I want to wipe it, I say yes, and the installer closes. The CPU returns to a normal idle so the process isn't taking place in the background or anything. I've tried reopening the installer, restarting the computer, and even re-flashing the ISO to USB, but every time the installer crashes at this step.
I'm running this on a fairly recent ASUS laptop which I had no issues installing either Linux Mint 21.2, or Debian 12 on via the same method.
