That’s it exactly, so Xfce is affected too
Does it help if you remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi?
I have seen this same problem on a Mint-xfce-22 VM installation using KVM/QEMU on a Xubuntu 24.04 host. I tried removing all packages that were added with the mint-meta-codecs but that caused more problems by also taking many packages I had manually chosen to add. Having found this report I removed the gstreamer1.0-vaapi package. That removed also the meta-codecs package but did not remove any other of the actual codecs; just the meta package was removed. Now the login loop has disappeared and all is good again.
Mint22 Xfce beta VM works fine in VMware Fusion, unless mint-meta-codecs is installed. Then the password screen shows, the password can be typed, and the panel appears very briefly. Then the password prompt pops up again. Removing mint-meta-codecs using the 'Recovery' option doesn't fix the problem -- it persists.
No such problems with Mint 21.3 Xfce in VMware Fusion.
