This seems to coincide with the PwnKit alert. Synaptic also fails to launch. Update Manager refreshes fine and the dialog shows it's not a mirror problem. All /usr/bin files are 755 so permissions seem OK. Tried sudo apt reinstall synaptic but Synaptic still won't launch and Update Manager won't update. Is anyone else having this problem?

Available updates are: firefox 96.0.3 wbkit2gtk 2.34.4-obuntu0.20.04.1

Update fails if I try either or both. The Update Manager dialog is simply "Could not install the security updates" :-(

Last successful updates were: 2022-01-27 firefox 96.0.1+linuxmint1+una to 96.0.2 2022-01-26 policykit-1 0.105-26ubuntu1.1 to 1.2

Ran $ apt update Got a statement that 6 file could be upgraded, so I ran $ apt list --upgradeable Then, I ran $ apt -upgrade All packages upgraded successfully so I opened & refreshed Update Manager. Update Manager reported "Your system is up to date"; good outcome. Synaptic still won't launch but I can use apt instead for the rare occasion I add SW. I'll close this thread as soon as Upgrade Manager informs me an update is needed and Install Updates succeeds.

Thanks to helpful replies at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=366868, Update Manager & Synaptic now work. I broke my system with "chmod 755 pkexec" and fixed it with "chmod 04755 pkexec" which set the "sticky bit" Synaptic needs. I remember "sticky bit" from my UNIX days in the 70s; it made up for slow main frames, so who needs it, right? Synaptic, et al. The suggestion to chmod 755 pkexec came from https://www.zdnet.com/article/major-lin ... ed-pwnkit/ "Expert" advice can be dangerous if not fully understood. It hurts to re-learn some lessons.
