I've been using Ubuntu-based Linux Mint for eight years now. I don't have a lot of storage space and as I need to dual boot with Windows I could only keep 90GB for Linux, so I decided to keep /home inside root so I don't run out of space for root and vice versa. When I need to do a clean install of Linux Mint, I simply boot in live mode, run a filesystem check on the root partition, manually delete all folders except /home and then in the installer select the same partition as root without formatting. But this is not possible on LMDE, through it's a option in the default Debian installer.
