Hold CTRL down and selecting several icons works well - no need to accurately click on a hole in an icon. For a big bunch of contiguous icons, SHIFT plus selecting two icons is probably a better alternative.

Keyboard shortcuts work fine when you have a hardware keyboard but for tablet configurations (i.e. touchscreen + wacom digitizer) without a hardware keyboard this feature is essential.
Issue Can't select/deselect multiple files/folders using only a mouse (i.e. custom selection, not click and drag selection).
Steps to reproduce Feature doesn't currently exist.
Expected behaviour Check box overlay (always visible or visible on hover) to select/deselect the file/folder. Dedicated column in detailed list view to select/deselect the file/folder. See link for Ubuntu Nautilus mock-ups and Google Docs examples. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ayatana/DoubleClick
