Heic images very temperamental

Bug description

Heic images in Pix don't seem to be working very well, though I think in theory they are supported. The behavior I observe is:

Thumbnails are fine
When viewing the full size images mostly Pix just shows the thumbnail, very occasionally the full image shows. I haven't been able to work out a pattern as to which ones work properly. All my heic images are from an iphone.

I have the following installed (from the Mint 21.3 repos): heif-gdk-pixbuf, heif-thumbnailer, libheif1 and lifbeif-dev.

Steps to reproduce

Open Pix, browser to a folder with heic images, try to view them.

Expected behavior

Heic images should work.

Additional information

I recently switched to Mint and previously used gthumb in xubuntu and heic images seemed to work (except there was another issue that the more heic images I viewed, the more memory was used to gthumb may have a memory leak).
