@fossfreedom are you still experiencing this issue?
It's still a question that I would like an answer to. Thanks

Issue A bug report has been raised on Debian Buster and I have raised it here because I'm wondering if LMDE handles this scenario - if it does please can you point me to the LMDE deb source package? TIA
Installed slick-greeter on a Debian Buster system already using lightdm with lightdm-gtk-greeter. Looked at the Debian alternatives group "lightdm-greeter" to select slick-greeter.
Steps to reproduce /usr/share/xgreeters/slick-greeter.desktop exists, but was not a member of the above group.
Expected behaviour Expected to be able to set lightdm-greeter to /usr/share/xgreeters/slick-greeter.desktop
Other information Debian's lightdm expects (in /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/01_debian.conf) its greeter to be set by the alternative "lightdm-greeter", but slick-greeter overrules this in 50-slick-greeter.conf. If, instead of using 50-slick-greeter.conf, slick-greeter set an alternative in the lightdm-greeter group it would be easy for users to switch greeters. Now it is necessary for a user or sysadmin to edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, or else uninstall the unused greeter.
lightdm-gtk-greeter already does this in debian/{postinst,prerm} files and slick-greeter could use the same method.
