My yearly (?) two cents.

• Create some unit tests (cmake-integrated gtests)
• Continuous integration using Jenkins
• Kill all boost dependencies and move to C++11 for smart pointers etc. Windows users wouldn't need to install all those boost dlls as a consequence.
• Move to gflags for configuration - much more developer friendly. Options can be created where they are needed - much more lisible and less of a pain in the a**.
• Use glog for diverse logging. Use VLOG(3) for in-depth analysis. Ask students to rerun buggy runs with --v=3 when reporting bugs. Use CHECK() and the CHECK_*() derivates for checking crucial assumptions.
• Profile with callgrind
• Use cmake's ExternalProjectAdd command to automatically install all dependencies (ODE etc.), instead of the painful current approach.
• Avoid relational mapping by deriving from protos wherever possible.

Btw glog provides backtrace on failed checks that can also be attached to segfaults. How awesome is that?

С++11 instead of boost is a good idea. C++11 can be compiled under MSVS Express 2013

  • According to my supervisor it should be possible to have a central Jenkins instance that tracks github pull requests and delegates build jobs to sub-Jenkinses for the three OSes.

I used google native code in google chrome, the problem is that it does not goes up higher than say 15-20% CPU. Otherwise, NaCl is a cool thing.
