No virtual keyboard on archos 5 IT #47

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install latest version on archos 5 IT.
2. Start program.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Previously, the virtual keyboard would appear. The virtual keyboard does not currently appear. I can get the virtual buttons (up / down / left / right / ok) to appear, but that's it.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

1.2.2 & 1.2.1 have the issue, running on an Archos 5 IT, firmware 2.0.15 (Android 1.6).

Please provide any additional information below.

  Thanks for the hard work!

Older versions requested a virtual keyboard to be opened by the OS. Rather than
using the OS keyboard, the 1.2 versions of the app comes with its own virtual
keyboard with a custom NetHack-friendly layout (easy access to Ctrl and Meta
commands, etc), which IMO makes the game much more playable without a physical
keyboard. By default, this keyboard will be visible in portrait mode, but not
landscape, and the Camera button, if present, is used to hide or show the
keyboard (in either mode). Perhaps on your device the application stays in
landscape mode? To hopefully fix, go to Menu/Preferences/Key Bindings, pick one
of the buttons that's physically present on your device (if any), and bind it
to "Virtual Keyboard". Then use that button to show the keyboard.

If that doesn't work, another thing you can try is to hold down the Menu button
- I think I read somewhere that Android devices are meant to display the
system's virtual keyboard, and that's working on my Nexus One (though not on
the G1). Not sure if you will be able to access the Ctrl commands that way, but
if so, at least that shouldn't be any worse than the older versions.

Please let me know if this helps. If not, maybe I'll need to allow for mapping
to more physical buttons, or add a menu option or button to hide/show the
keyboard.

My handset is setup for normal use in landscape mode. Honestly, I never tried
rotating it to portrait mode for nethack -- it didn't need it before so I
didn't think of it. When I rotate it, the keyboard appears just fine. My
handset has no camera button. Nice job, this one does work tons better than
the OS keyboard.

Thanks!

In the new version 1.2.4, there are options under Menu/Preferences, for locking
the application in portrait or landscape orientation, and for toggling the
virtual keyboard on or off directly (if you don't have any physical buttons to
bind this functionality to). Hope this works for you.
