Thanks for your feature request. Especially in schools, teachers want to know who is who and therefore we should not allow this by default. Maybe it's a good idea to connect this to the room access, because if you allow guests everyone could join with whatever name he likes (as you do with private tabs).
Well, in implementing this I do not see an issue in education use. If the teacher tells the students to keep their original name, why should they change it? As soon as they switch on their camera, the teacher will see they were switching names, and it's their mark becoming worse. Btw. if students really want to mock their teachers, they might simply change their display name in the account preferences.

:joy: you never worked in the field of education, right?
As soon as they switch on their camera
To save bandwidth most of the time not the entire class is using a webcam.
they might simply change their display name in the account preferences.
In a professional setup, this is most often not possible, because the data is coming from an idm.
Well, I am working in education... And yes, I hope most setups use LDAP or any other Auth, but reality unfortunately looks different.
I would hence propose the following:
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
In our use case, we use clear-text names in the Nextcloud but often have public meetings on BigBlueButton with registered users as well as guests. We are lacking the option for the registered users to change their display names. This is an immense privacy issue.
Describe the solution you'd like
In input field on the redirection page for the display name would be great. Just like for non-registered users but with the Nextcloud name preset in case you do not want to change the display name.
Describe alternatives you've considered
We have developed an ugly workaround using Private tabs in the web browsers, but this workflow has an awful usability and destroys moderation options in the public meetings.

🙏🏿 Thanks for this great integration!
