Can we figure out how to make white-spacing easier? #69

An issue specifically dealing with the document at https://github.com/davesmith4398/best_practice_membranes

"Eliminating white space: we have experienced a lot of difficulty “taming” the tables in our document (in both tabular and longtable formats). Given that the article is two-column format, allowing the tables to span both columns was a challenge in and of itself. The current problem, as you note, is with this white space. We have tried to prevent page breaking, for example, but we are stuck on how to formally address this. We currently have “hacked” the problem a bit by rearranging some of the text before and after the tables. If you or any of the other LiveCoMS people or LaTeX people you know in general know how to solve this, I would greatly appreciate your help.?
