What is your project, and what problem does it solve?

Rad Radio (renaming to +1) is a decentralized live-streaming platform built on Livepeer and StreamETH. It's designed for online music communities looking for an easy, customizable, and independent way to stream and host their digital video content. Rad Radio helps reduce their reliance on centralized platforms and introduces new means of community engagement with features like real-time tipping.

Please describe in details what your final deliverable for this project will be.

We may have the opportunity to become the streaming provider for Dekmantel, an Amsterdam-based company at the forefront of electronic music.

The deliverable would be a production-ready application suitable for Dekmantel to use to stream the entire 2024 Dekmantel Festival in August 2024. This would include a custom front-end, a full integration with StreamETH, and a new real-time tipping module.

How will this deliverable benefit the Livepeer ecosystem?

Phase 1: Rebrand & MVP Build-out

The outcome of this first phase is to complete the rebrand from Rad Radio -> +1 and build a more comprehensive MVP of the Rad Radio app that can be used for our first community activation at Sonar Festival.

  • A complete rebrand of Rad Radio, including new logo, design system, and front-end.
  • First version of production-ready web-app with full StreamETH integration.
  • MVP of new tipping functionality and live chat.

Phase 2: Sonar Festival Activation & Dekmantel Scoping

This phase will be marked by the June 13th activation at Sonar Festival in Barcelona. We will be streaming a 250p event @ LAUT alongside the Berlin-based collective La Noche, with DJs THC (~12.9k followers), Byron Yeates (~8.6k followers), and others. This activation will be an opportunity to test our our new web app in the wild, with the collective and artists promoting the platform on their own channels.

While the Dekmantel engagement is still not set in stone, this would be the time period dedicated to scoping their product requirements and starting the build out for the August festival.

This time period also includes EthBerlin, where we will co-host a session with Livepeer, bringing together top players in the local music community for a workshop/event regarding creator monetization and ownership in the music industry. We will be responsible for curating the invite list and contributing to on-the-ground production.

  • Community activation at Sonar Festival in Barcelona, including on-the-ground production
  • Second version of production-ready web app, ideally with tipping integration
  • Custom front-end for Sonar stream
  • Marketing campaign with La Noche for Sonar stream
  • Product scope document for Dekmantel (TBD)
  • Co-host EthBerlin event with Livepeer

Phase 3: Stream Dekmantel Festival 2024

While the Dekmantel collaboration is not set in stone, we want to proactively plan this milestone around the festival to ensure we'd be able to execute properly. If Dekmantel falls through, we are positive we could land another community activation in Berlin during Pride Week.

  • Final version of production-ready web application, with all features (chat, reactions, tipping) built in
  • Community activation at Dekmantel Festival
  • Marketing campaign with Dekmantel Festival
  • Custom front-end for Dekmantel, including video archive
  • TBD (depending on Dekmantel's proposed scope)

We can revisit this scope at the end of Milestone 1 and 2 to ensure expectations are aligned.

Specify your team's long-term plans to maintain this software and upgrade it over time

We believe this is an opportunity to take Rad Radio 'to the next level'. Our goal is to use the Sonar and Dekmantel opportunities to bootstrap our brand identity & app to a point where we could release the application as an independent platform that anybody could use. If we're able to land the right partners, we'll be very excited to continue building out this app beyond the scope of this grant.

Please describe (in words) your team's relevant experience, and why you think you are the right team to build this project. You can cite your team's prior experience in similar domains, doing similar dev work, individual team members' backgrounds, etc.

We (Abbey, Pablo, Brandon, and Jason) have been hacking on Rad Radio in our spare time for the last year and a half, mainly because we really believe in the idea and the impact it could have in the music industry.

Pablo Voorvaart is the founder of StreamETH, which has found immense success and adoption within the Web3 space, streaming hundreds of events per year. He views this as an exciting opportunity to roll out a new user experience on StreamETH, targeted at a more mainstream audience.

Brandon Oxendine is a prolific and talented designer, with extensive experience across Web2/Web3 industries. He was one of the main designers of Radicle (radicle.xyz) and is currently the lead designer of Drips (drips.network). Previously he worked as a designer for Grover, a marketplace-based rental service for tech products (https://www.brandonoxendine.com/).

Jason Efstathiou is a full-stack developer and UX designer, currently leading the front-end development of app.drips.network. Jason has also worked at Grover, with Brandon. Jason has comprehensive experience building apps for people (that they actually want to use)!

Abbey Titcomb is a product manager/strategist who has spent the last four years building Radicle and Drips, within the Radworks ecosystem. She spends her time building decentralized technologies, growing open-source communities, and designing governance systems. She's been a long-time hacker, starting her Ethereum journey at EthDenver in 2018.

Together, this team has already streamed over five events with the first Rad Radio MVP, working alongside partners like HÖR, Resident Advisor, RefractionDAO, Lens, and RAAVE. We've streamed from a variety of locations, from a beach in Lisbon (on a 4G hotspot), to a bathroom in Berlin (on WiFi!), and even a packed club in Istanbul.

Who is your target user group? How do you plan on getting your users to use this?

We plan on obtaining users from all 3 groups by working with partners in the industry like Dekmantel and La Noche.

How did you learn about the Livepeer Grants Program?

Shann and Hans! They are the absolute best.

Was this project started at a hackathon or another web3 event? Which one?

No! We started it on our own, as a hack between Livepeer, StreamETH, and Drips.

Please include any additional information that you think would be useful in helping us to evaluate your proposal.

Although the grant is for up to $15k, we'd like to propose an additional sponsorship to cover the costs for the Berlin activation event. If we land the Dekmantel engagement, we believe the $15k should be allocated entirely towards product development. We are flexible and happy to discuss these details further with the team to ensure clear mutual expectations.
