limited WAN bandwidth #1131

I have a 80 MBit/sec internet connection. If I connect the WAN cable directly
to my notebook then the download speed reaches the maximal speed by 10
MBytes/sec. (Actually the bandwidth provided by my ISP is a little above the
promised 80 MBit/sec.) Unfortunately if I download the same file through the
router the download speed is about 4.5 MBytes/sec through wireless and about
7MBytes/sec through wired connection.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download something through direct connection (without the router).
2. Download the same data through the router.
3. Measure the download speed difference.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The router is advertised with 200-500 MBit/sec internet connection speed with
the factory firmware. I expect similar values with the custom firmware.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
- The firmware version: 3.4.3.7-075
- The WAN Connection Type: PPPoE
- HW NAT is enabled (it is set to Offload TCP/UDP for WAN/LAN)
- For testing I have downloaded the Fedora 20 Desktop Edition ISO image.
- I haven't tested the 80 MBit/sec connection with the factory fimrware, but I
could install it back if you wanted me to test it.
- I have restarted the router before testing and stopped the rTorrent daemon.
- File transfer from the attached HDD is done with 10 Mbytes/sec through
Wireless connection.

I cannot attach the System Log but I can send it to you via email. According to
google: Issue attachment storage quota exceeded.

Do you download the file to the HDD connected to router's USB-port?

Hi Peter,
I have the N56U with 3.4.3.7-072 and I easily get my ISPs 20mb/s download rates over wif and ethernet. So i dont think it's a firmware issue. If you have a 80mb rate from your isp and only getting 10mb from that, I would also check to make sure your modem is support. Is it DOCSIS 3.0?

I should also mention I have a 20mb plan from my ISP and get 20MB when
downloading. I test using http://www.speedtest.net/. Can you run a test at that
website and post the results wired connection with modem and then through
router?

Dr.Sydorenko.O: For the test I downloaded the ISO file to the HDD of my PC.

Troy: The internet is provided through ethernet cable that is connected to my
router. I don't have a modem. (This is the official TopNET service of the DIGI
ISP at Budapest, Hungary.)

I have used it earlier but after a few tests it started to struggle and measure
very varying values. Now I tested it again. I executed 4 - 4 tests (through the
router and with directly connected PC). The results are 71.66 Mbit/sec download
and 25.37 Mbit/sec upload through the router and 87.75 Mbit/sec download and
26.06 Mbit/sec upload average speeds. The Transmission daemon was shut down
during the tests.

I have no idea what have changed. The conditions were the same, except it is
now 02 am. The difference is not that significant as before but it is still
there.

Peter
