work on data for figure on resource pulses #1

NEON has a site (SRER) near Tucson we should check for soil moisture (or precip).

Jornada has gap-filled precip data. They also have soil moisture but would need to check how gappy it is and pick which site is best. (Maybe best to email them?)

On your question about soil moisture, I have not tried to download the data, but this appears to be a good dataset:

The Western Regional Climate Center also has a network of soil moisture sensors, but again I haven't used their data before. That would be the one to use for an individual site, though.

In summer 2023, I asked @ngoj1 and @ JulieSieg to help with finding real data for the conceptual community assembly figure. They each made repos:

@ngoj1 Can you confirm these soil moisture data are the ones in the figure?

sixpanel_concept_increasespp

and can you confirm this citation seems correct?

Duniway, M. (n.d.), ‘Jornada Basin LTER: Wireless meteorological station at NPP C-CALI site: Daily average soil volumetric water content data: 2013 - ongoing (accessed 1 June 2023)’, doi:10.6073/pasta/48000a94106fa0284305f9c556c7814a.

Thanks!

Hi Lizzie,

Yes, that soil moisture data was used for the figure and the citation appears correct too (I checked the Jornada LTER website's soil VWC data catalogue).

Best regards, Justin

Great! Thanks. And can you remind me which year we plotted?

Hi Lizzie,

This data is from 2018.

@ngoj1 Thanks! Any updates on the figures? My co-author and I need to submit revisions on Monday so I was hoping to pull things together this weekend, but let me know what's possible/reasonable for you. Thanks!

ngoj1 commented 4 months ago

Hi Lizzie,

Sorry for the delay! Here's my current idea, trying to combine all of the concepts together so that it can show time, functional traits, selective pressures, and the spectrum all in one:

I'm not too sure what traits I should have added so I thought of the ones that made the most sense to me, but if there's anything you want to modify just let me know. I also don't know what the right hand axis should be called, since it's meant to represent the tendency toward certain traits, but it could also be "Abundance of species carrying functional traits:" and then have those traits listed as shown currently. Is there any jargon that might more succinctly reflect what this is trying to say?

Best regards, Justin

@ngoj1 Thanks! The image did not show up though so can you post progress (including any tweaks to phenologycircles) as illustrator and PNG to repo? Then I can take a look (likely not until tomorrow afternoon at the soonest).

ngoj1 commented 4 months ago

Hi Lizzie,

I just pushed both the cold hardiness draft figure and also the updated phenology circles figure to the repo as ai and png files. For the phenology circles I thought adding fading arrows into and out of the circle could hopefully represent how the storage phenomenon could extend beyond one season, with some text saying "storage from last season" or "storage for next season". Let me know what you think, and if there's anything that could be done to further clarify it!

Best regards, Justin

@ngoj1 Thanks! I tweaked the circles a little and merged the new trade-offs figure with the old (see here) so I think we are good! I am tempted to close this issue now, but will wait to see what co-author and editor say.
