clean up cleaning/checks #61

please add a _README.md and make sure all the code is good. Check out commits 7b17fbb9c8bfc7b766ea36df429207d012d5098f and 66c908f9923c827a4425dff17e15faa5b31ecb22 where I made this and deleted some files that I assumed were created elsewhere (and need a new home). Thank you!

@DeirdreLoughnan Just an update that @ngoj1 has a handy file he writes about alternating germ temps etc. and I told him to write it to this folder for now.
