There have been numerous requests to make following users and joining groups easier. Please review this area for usability.

Suggestions from users:

the profile search results would let you follow people without opening their profile
Would like to see a "Follow/Unfollow" option along with the other hover buttons on each stream item. This makes it simpler, more productive to follow users directly from the stream without having to go to their profile page.
It would be nice if the Groups heading on the Activity tab had a plus sign like the Lists and Saved Searches does. As it stands, its a little unintuitive to join a group.
It would be good if you could join multiple groups from one location vs. having to go to each profile page individually.

Other food for thought...to keep the User interface free of junk, I would suggest the hover over approach. I like the thought of being able to search profile, or view the connections tab and be able to quickly follow people or join a group. It was also suggested to me, to put the focus on the joining and following, opposed to the leave and un-follow. I think it would be ok if that feature remained on the profile page.

The other concern was that people were click on the follow/un-follow button multiple times, resulting in the other person receiving multiple emails that someone was following them. A suggestion would be once the user clicks the follow/join button on the profile page, there would be a message to indicate that the following action was successfully, not until the page is navigated away from and then the user returns would the leave button be present. It was also suggested that the leave button be a link (like with do with "cancel" to de-emphasize it). As far as following people from the connections tab or search results, i would not provide the ability to un-follow them that way. I think the user should have to go to the profile page.
