This PR merges many development features and bugfixes into the master branch. There are too many new features and bugfixes to list here, and this version has been used in many places since. I will simply merge this branch when tests pass and continue work from there.

I have bumped the version here to 0.9.5 to avoid any ambiguities when reporting versions in bug-reports etc.

lneuhaus commented 3 years ago

Now passes tests on Python 3.6 and 3.7. I'm having issues with Python 3.8 but suggest to not fix them before #355 is merged.
