Ability to switch auto update on and off #80

Auto update should have a switch-off mode for times when one wants to just 
quickly load a character (such as at a game session) without having to wait for 
downloads and merges.  I'm aware that "fast" can be set in the config file, but 
updating in the background bogs down my older netbook.
