I hadn't been looking at the rendered PDFs in detail. This ticket is just to capture some of the rendering quirks that are not apparent from looking only at the DocBook XML.
Hyphenization of words, perhaps related to bad line break calculation. For example, "com-posite" and "emerg-ing", which doesn't occur in the source XML.
Section breaks are missing leaded line breaks
Different font used for section headers for no apparent reason
