fix to get flush_interval > 0 working #67

This PR makes flush_interval > 0 working as expected.

Any clue why the CI build is complaining? I think its unrelated to the change...

@heli80 there were a couple of tests relying incorrectly on flush. I added a commit to fix those tests and merged this + the spec fix to master + bump to 4.2.4 we're good to publish 👍
